Each method asks for intentions\, be they therapeutic\, meditative\, or reflective; and each method’s distinctive way of creation elicits its own experience in our spirit\, perhaps leading us on a journey to find our own center. \nThe workshop will unfold over three Sunday afternoons: \n\nNovember 20: Sashiko mending – its history and techniques. Participants will work with two 4-1/2″ linen squares and plant-dyed cotton thread.\nDecember 11: Seed Stitch. Participants will work with two 5″ linen squares and plant-dyed silk thread.\nJanuary 8: Embroider a Book Cover. Each participant will create their own design to embroider a small project. DESCRIPTION:With Judith Symonds\n3 Sundays: April 24\, May 1\, May 22\, 1:00-5:00pm \nIn this three-session course for beginners\, we will use 12 x 16” lap looms to learn the what\, why\, and how of warp and weft. \nFirst we will warp our looms\, and then we will master even weave\, kilim\, cross-hatching\, soumak\, twining\, pick\, knotting\, fringe\, and more. Finally\, we will learn how to combine different tapestry stitches\, yarn textures\, and colors to achieve endless creative possibilities. Students will complete several small projects\, and acquire the skills needed to continue exploring tapestry weaving on their own. \nThe course fee of $250 includes a lap loom and materials. Starting with a raw fleece from local Jacob sheep\, we will wash the wool\, card it\, and spin it using a drop spindle. DESCRIPTION:With Chris Marlow\nPLEASE NOTE NEW DATES:November 21\, December 5 & 12\, 2:00-4:00pm \nAutumn is a wonderful time to knit a pair of socks – thinking of how cozy they will feel with your winter boots or for making a precious gift. \nIn three sessions we will knit the cuff\, turn the heel\, create the instep\, and complete the foot and toe for a pair of socks\, working both socks at the same time\, on separate needles. It will be necessary to know casting on and the knit and purl stitches. \nPlant-dyed worsted weight wool will be provided. Yarn is locally sourced from upstate NY farms and spinning mills\, and plant-dyed by hand at the Fiber Craft Studio. \nYou will need to have a set of size 6 or size 8 double pointed needles\, two sets would be ideal. We will have some to purchase. \nChris Marlow graduated from the first Applied Arts Cycle in 1999. She has a BFA from Rosemont College in PA. She was a handwork teacher at Green Meadow Waldorf School for 15 years and at the West Side Community School\, a charter school in NYC\, for two years. Chris became co-director at the studio in 2012. SUMMARY:The Fiber Craft Studio: Art of Clothing
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, which meets on ten Saturdays from September to May\, we design and sew garments using four natural fibers (cotton\, linen\, wool and silk) to create four items for a complete outfit. Drafting simple patterns and sewing by hand gives us an opportunity for meditative work and a chance to center ourselves. Over the course of the year we experience different sewing techniques\, plant dyeing\, and embroidery as we create our own unique fabric for our garments. \nEach class includes art and/or movement activities to accompany our handwork and bring enlivening impulses to each individual as well as the group.  \nMiho Suzuki is a co-director of the Fiber Craft Studio as well as the lead faculty for the Art of Clothing course and faculty in the Applied Arts Program. DESCRIPTION:Join Anne-Marie Kavulla for an exploration of natural dye color from the comfort of your kitchen! Using mason jars and plant dye extracts\, participants will have the opportunity to dye many swatches\, allowing a variety of colors to reveal themselves through several variations in techniques. Each registration includes a dye kit including pre-mordanted linen fabric and dye. Swatches can be kept as a dye journal or sewn together as part of a small project such as a patchwork pillow or coasters.  \nAnne-Marie Kavulla’s natural dye practice is rooted in principles of spontaneity\, change\, and circularity. her commitment to natural and organic materials is central to her belief in circularity – mending\, repurposing\, and ultimately composting each handmade good.
