SUMMARY:The Age of Walt Whitman and the Moral Awakening of a Nation by Karl Fredrickson
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 11\, 7:30 pm \n“The greatest poet does not moralize—he knows the soul.” Walt Whitman \nOn January 1st\, 1863\, the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect\, and within two years more than four million enslaved people had gained their freedom. Yes\, the Civil War made this possible\, but its acceptance by the American people required something else: a gradual shift in consciousness that had been at work for more than two decades. This evening we will trace this shift through the rise of a genuine American literature—especially the poetry of Walt Whitman—and the stories of several individuals who\, though largely forgotten today\, stirred Americans to consider the true nature of the human soul and spirit. These include Laura Bridgman\, the first deaf-and-blind American to learn to communicate with others\, and Dorothea Dix\, who roamed across America bringing awareness to the plight—and innate dignity—of those among us who suffer from insanity. All movements toward equal rights since that time\, from women’s rights to the Civil Rights movement to the rights movements of recent decades\, are rooted in this search for the true image of the human being. \nWith Eurythmy by Eurythmy Spring Valley Ensemble: Walt Whitman\, Darest Thou Now O Soul \nTickets: $15 (regular)\, $9 (students and seniors). Tickets will be on sale at the door \nFor more information\, please email info@eurythmy.org \n

SUMMARY:A Shovel of Stars Overhead: Where to? What Next?
DESCRIPTION:November 16\, 8:00 pm – 9:15 pm \nA Shovel of Stars Overhead: Where to? What next?” embodies the longing\, questioning\, and bewilderment that belong to this moment in America\, while asking where\, from whom\, and how something greater can come to be. The program is inspired by the words and compositions of a diversity of artists who poignantly reflect the tensions of their own time. These include the beloved and influential Langston Hughes\, statesman Archibald MacLeish\, the modern lyric Denise Levertov\, and great American bard Walt Whitman. Levertov and other poets in the program orient us to the transcendent presence of the invisible in our midst. Evocative 20th-century American composer Henry Cowell sets the stage\, while contemporary composer Grigory Smirnov threads through the tensions to a quieter\, inner place. The rich harmonies of Sibelius and Chopin weave past into future\, and east into west\, leading us to the grandeur\, purpose\, and elemental urge in Antonin Dvorak’s final movement of the “Dumky” piano trio. Written not long before Dvorak’s maiden voyage to America\, the trio’s changing harmonies and rhythms seem to anticipate the dawning vistas of a new land\, and reflect something of the elusive and vast\, young and surging\, fighting but maturing American spirit. \nEurythmy:\nColleen Foglia\, Virginia Hermann\, Wei Rung\, Matej Rybka\, Barbara Schneider-Serio\, Sea-Anna Vasilas \nRecitation: Jennifer Kleinbach \nPiano: Grigory Smirnov \nViolin: Dominik Landowne \nCello: Christoph Grieder \nAdmission/Fee:  Tickets at the Door: $20 (regular)\, $12 (students and seniors) \nFor more information\, please email marta@eurythmy.org

SUMMARY:The Incarnation of the Logos by Glen Williamson
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, January 12\, 4:00 PM  5:30 PM \nAnthropos Presents:\nThe Incarnation of the Logos\nAn Epic Tale of Christ’s Coming to Earth\nTold by Actor and Storyteller Glen Williamson \nA Fundraiser for the ESV Graduating Class’ trip to Dornach\,\nSwitzerland \nThis wondrous story begins with the messianic prophecies in the Temple in Jerusalem\, weaves through many parts of the world and throughout history\, and ends with the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. Magnificent pictures of the dynamic interpenetration of divine and human worlds are sometimes astonishing and sometimes familiar in this dramatic chapter of the greatest story ever told. \nGlen Williamson weaves this epic from the two very different stories of Jesus’ birth in the Gospels of Mathew and Luke\, as well as from the work of spiritual researcher Rudolf Steiner and theologians Emil Bock and Edward R. Smith. \nTickets at the Door: $20 (regular)\, $12 (students and seniors) \nFor more information\, please email marta@eurythmy.org.
