Dr. Chuck Stead will present the research he has compiled on the local folktale of the Ramapo Salamander. Considered one of the earliest stories in association with the Dutch Iron Mining of the 17th century in the Ramapo Valley, this tale includes influences of Christian, Algonquin, and Angolan culture. According to Stead, this folklore is an indicator of the rich multi-ethnic indigenous narrative that plays such a significant role in our valley. Together, we will deconstruct the story, stripping away much of the romantic dressing from the 19th century, and consider the origins of its main characters and theme.
