A North American Festival Celebrating the Performing Arts of Eurythmy, Speech, and Music

August 1-6, 2023

This summer celebration of the art of eurythmy will offer a unique opportunity to experience eurythmy as a performing art. The week-long program will include performances, demonstrations, workshops, and master classes for every level of interest and experience. Participants will be immersed in a rejuvenating atmosphere of eurythmic creativity!

*Tone Eurythmy on the Intervals / Jolanda Frischknecht

Jolanda Frischknecht was born in Switzerland and lives in Portland, Oregon. She is co-director of the Eurythmy training initiative Pacific Eurythmy and a member of Portland Eurythmy which performs locally and in the Pacific Northwest. She teaches eurythmy at the Micha-el Institute (teacher training) and homeschool classes. She is also a therapeutic eurythmist and works with children and adults in the Portland area.

Tone Eurythmy / Dorothea Mier

This two-day workshop is offered twice (Workshop 1 and Workshop 4) to allow for more participants. Please do not sign up for more than one of the two workshops with Dorothea.

Dorothea Mier, an alumna and former teacher of the Lea van der Pals School in Dornach, was a member of the Goetheanum Stage Group under the preeminent eurythmist and director Marie Savitch. From 1980 until 2005, Dorothea was the Artistic Director of Eurythmy Spring Valley. Dorothea continues to teach at ESV and offer workshops worldwide.

Poetry and Eurythmy: Uncover the True Nature of a Poem / Natasha Moss

We will explore capacities of our eurythmy instrument as expression of poetry, the word as it streams into the life of the creative arts. All that has formed us as eurythmists; all that we have garnered as understanding of the human being can be found in poetry. As a musician plays music with an instrument, we can “play” a poem with our eurythmy instrument. How to allow the living quality of a poem to speak through our eurythmy instrument? How does Imagination, Inspiration, and Intuition help us uncover the nature of a poem and what the eurythmy figures can teach us as movement capacities?

Natasha, an alumna of the School of Eurythmy Spring Valley, is a faculty member (2008 to present). She studied at Emerson College; the Speech and Drama course with Virginia Brett, and the Zuccoli Eurythmy Training, Goetheanum. From 1987-2007 Natasha taught eurythmy and developed an adult eurythmy program in Portland, OR.

Elements of Tone Eurythmy / Barbara Schneider-Serio

Barbara is Artistic Director of both the Eurythmy Spring Valley Ensemble and the professional training (2005 to present). An alumna of ESV, Barbara has been on the faculty since 1988. She has developed over thirty eurythmy programs and has performed throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and China.

*Becoming Angels: Letting the Movements of the Etheric Body Replace Those of the Physical Body / Jan Ranck

In various contexts Rudolf Steiner refers to eurythmy as “Angel Dances” and explains that in eurythmy the human being is “already standing in a higher world,” rising up “to an angelic form of Being,” such that “when one watches eurythmy, one must carry the question in one’s heart, ‘Yes, are those all angels?’” He connects this with the fact that “in eurythmy the movements of the etheric body come in the place of the physical body” so that “the etheric body actually moves in the physical world.” In this course we will explore how this can be achieved in practice.

An alumna of the Eurythmeum, Dornach, Jan taught there and at the London School of Eurythmy. She founded and directed the Jerusalem Eurythmy Ensemble (1990) and the Jerusalem Academy of Eurythmy (1992). Jan has held master classes worldwide, including at the Goetheanum and within the Alanus MA Program in English.

*Youth Eurythmy Part I: Contemporary Music and Poetry Explored through Movement / Sea-Anna Vasilas

In this collaborative eurythmy exploration for anyone ages 18-25 (or young at heart), we will move and create contemporary poetry and music as an expression of the questions living in our hearts and in the world.

Sea-Anna is a member of the Eurythmy Spring Valley Ensemble and a faculty member of the School of Eurythmy. She leads public eurythmy courses and workshops within the contexts of biodynamic agriculture, Biography and Social Art, the Christian Community Church, and the Anthroposophical Society in North America. Sea-Anna holds an MA in Performance Eurythmy from Alanus Hochschule, Germany.

“April Wind” by Frederick Turner – Emphasis on Rhyme / Beth Usher

The two rhyme workshops will be independent. The Wednesday session will be a movement introduction to the poet Frederick Turner (born 1943) and his poetry, casting light on why and how he works with general elements of rhyme, including in “April Wind.” On Thursday, participants move group forms and exercises for “April Wind.” On both days, an “April Wind” performance in the classroom will be part of the session, with Beth Usher (eurythmy) and Steve Usher (recitation).

Beth Usher is a 1983 graduate of the School of Eurythmy, Spring Valley, NY, where she taught, performed, and carried administrative tasks for several years. Beth’s goal is to see that eurythmy can stand side by side with the other classical arts. Trained in the 1990s as a eurythmy therapist, her goal is to truly help one person.

Seven Manifestations of IAO / Gail P. Langstroth

The two-day workshop will awaken in the participants an experience of the significance of this original Trinity of Vowels which Rudolf Steiner used in September 1912 in order to begin; and how this path can be used as we search for a poem’s choreography and gestures.

Gail is a poet, eurythmist, visual artist, and witness. An alumna of Emerson College and Eurythmeum Stuttgart, Gail performed and taught worldwide with the Else-Klink-Ensemble; for the last 21 years freelance in Spain, Germany, England, Russia, and South and North America. Gail is an award-winning poet with an MFA in poetry from Drew University. Her recent film, Voiced: words from asphalt; performance piece: SteelWords; and publication: firegarden / jardín-de-fuego, GetFreshBooks.

Deepening the Eurythmy of Steiner’s Soul Calendar Verses / Mark and Maria Ebersole

Each verse presents a moment of soul/nature/cosmic relationship and development. Steiner gave each verse eurythmic expression in specific colors in specific forms. It is our conviction that the relationship of colors in forms moving with each other is the gateway to the most profound experience. Focusing on a few summer verses with three figures, some clarity on the content will be sought. After introductory warm-up all will practice one color/form, then a second, then experience in pairs this relationship. Then groups of three will explore the relationships, also taking turns watching. The emphasis will be on interrelationships through form and color, not on individual gesture.

Mark and Maria taught for years in a school for developmentally disabled children and are alumni of The Hague, Holland. They have been active in stage work in Holland, California, New York, and Toronto, in Camphill institutions and Waldorf schools, for over three decades. They founded the South Coast Eurythmy Ensemble with Johanna Mueller-Laurelin and gave yearly shows for children. In Toronto they helped found and worked with Northern Star Eurythmy for four years on the Foundation Stone in eurythmy, finally presenting it daily at the Conference of the North in White Horse, Canada, 2009. The Soul Calendar verses have been a daily staple for almost 50 years, performing many. Maria and Mark are therapeutic eurythmists. They will be joined by Julie Williford, alumna of ESV.

*Child’s Play / Lilith Dupuis

The Bay Area Eurythmy Ensemble invites you to join our performance piece here in Spring Valley, “The Grain That Was Like an Egg” by Leo Tolstoy. Participants in this workshop will open with fundamental exercises from the early eurythmy indications and move on to learn eurythmy forms and sounds to be in the opening scene. Eurythmy enthusiasts are welcome to participate in this workshop and then perform with us. Workshop participants should attend both sessions of this workshop in order to be prepared to perform.

The Bay Area Eurythmy Ensemble has been in existence since 2013 and will be premiering their seventh program at the Eurythmy Festival. Ensemble membership changes as new eurythmists come or leave the San Francisco Bay Area. We are devoted to offering eurythmy as a performing art in the hope that it may inspire young people. Lilith trained at the American Eurythmy School, Mt. Shasta, CA.

*Planets in Eurythmy Part I / Andrew Dzezulionis

Andrew offers a public course on the planets in eurythmy, with experiences through form, poetry, and speech sound. He will go through each planet’s color, day, gesture, sound and character.

Andrew is a performer and teacher of eurythmy. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, and toured Europe with a professional eurythmy stage troupe. Andrew lives in Los Angeles and continues to perform eurythmy in Europe and the US.

*Parzival Project Part I / Alexandra Spadea, John McDowell, Emmanuel Vukovich

A new musical narrative of the Parzival story including eurythmy, theater and visual arts!

Why Parzival in this day and age, what is the relevance of his brother Feirefiz in these times, and what are the universal and timeless human experiences in this story?

In the spirit of this being a shared experience, Emmanuel and John will introduce their 28-year collaboration and vision for this musical narrative; Alexandra will invite participants to explore some scenes in eurythmy, to be shared toward the end of the week.

Some elements of this workshop may contribute to a eurythmy flashmob in Central Park on the last day of the festival, if there is interest and enthusiasm for this.

Annelies Davidson has performed and taught in adult education since 1975 in London, England, and at Eurythmy Spring Valley. Although retired in the Netherlands, Annelies still returns each year for a month to Spring Valley to teach.

Developing Characters in Fairytales / Natasha Moss

Workshop 3, Wednesday.

We will work with the wonderful flexibility of eurythmy to discover how we can express the different aspects of characters as they appear in fairytales. Moving in particular ways can reveal unique qualities: a giant, a witch, a prince or a princess; different animals; soul qualities of courage, maleficence, stupidity, dullness, cleverness, innocence, etc. We begin with an exploration of various movement possibilities, as well as explore how our limbs and spatial orientation have effect depending on our use of them.

The Spirits of the Elements Hear It; May Human Beings Hear It / Hélène Besnard

Workshop 3, Thursday.

On this centenary of the Foundation Stone with its wonderful Meditation, the beings of Earth, Water, Air, and Fire will be addressed in this workshop. Through little pearls from French-speaking poets and passages from the poem presented by the animator with the Eurythmy Group Interval on Wednesday evening, we will try to create with our eurythmy a living contact with them.

Born in Quebec in 1952, Hélène Besnard’s early quest for a universal language led her to train in eurythmy in Chatou, France. There, she spent an extra year as a member of the artistic troupe. Back in Quebec, she founded, with Christa Kuehn, the eurythmic artistic group Voix d’Amérique, which became Eurythmie-Montréal. She was also a class teacher for 4 years, and a eurythmy teacher for all ages, in a wide variety of contexts. She is presently member of the Ensemble d’Eurythmie Interval. The theme of the four elements can be found everywhere in her pedagogical and poetic books.

*Eurythmy and the Four Ethers / Maria Ver Eecke

We will explore the four elements in eurythmy and poetry. This foundation will help us contemplate the four ethers. How can we create a relationship with warmth, light, tone, and life in our eurythmy practice?

Maria is the therapeutic eurythmist for the School of Eurythmy Spring Valley, NY. She has a diploma from the Medical Section of the Goetheanum, and is certified by AnthroMed. Maria has performed and taught eurythmy for over forty years. She is editor of newsletters for EANA and ATHENA.

I Speak: Indications from Rudolf Steiner, Tatiana Kisselef, and Other Early Eurythmists / Christina Beck

Indications from Tatiana Kisselef and other early eurythmists given to Molly von Heider whom I trained with and returned often to work with on these indications. Molly trained with Isabella De Jaager in Dornach. During that time she worked intensively with eurythmists who had received indications for English poems directly from Rudolf Steiner. Some are little known. I love to pass these on. We will seek to transform ourselves through these indications so that the poems come to eurythmic life.

Christina trained with Molly von Heider, England, and at the Eurythmeum Stuttgart, 1973-77. She performed with the Eurythmeum from 1977-80. For eight years Christina was part of the ESV Faculty and Ensemble. Christina is known for her many collaborative stage projects (from 1980 to the present). Visit her website.

*Calendar of the Soul in Eurythmy with Melissa Lyons

We will explore the elements of speech eurythmy through color, gesture, and form in our work with Rudolf Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul verse for early August.

Melissa completed her training at Eurythmy Spring Valley in 1997. Since graduating she has lived in the Threefold community, teaching eurythmy to adults at Sunbridge College, the Fiber Craft Studio, and the Steiner School of Speech Arts, while working as a full-time administrator of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association. She has also been active in the branch and festival life at Threefold, and, more recently, enjoyed renewing her experiences with tone eurythmy in the postgraduate course at Eurythmy Spring Valley.

“The 1915 angle-gestures are movable do expression!” We will explore movable-do practice in singing, briefly consider the records of the angle-gestures, and begin to take up the gestures as movable-do expression. The earliest records of the angle-gestures are in the new edition of Eurythmie als sichtbares Gesang. Kate is a eurythmist with degrees in English literature and music; a long-time anthroposophist; and a pianist for eurythmy. She has experience with orchestral instruments, choral and chamber singing, poetic recitation, sculptural art. Her research includes the foundation of music eurythmy, speech eurythmy, and recitation of Shakespeare’s pentameter.

Human Sole: Speaking through the Soulfulness of Threefold Walking / Cameron MacArthur

Workshop 5, Saturday.

Speaking through the soulfulness of threefold walking, and how that allows me, as a man, to become more eurythmically expressive. Eurythmy is a riddle to me. I have journeyed with this riddle through stage work since I graduated high school. Walking has also long interested me, especially the threefold step and its relationship to speech. I would like to share some of my experiences and explorations into how eurythmy can give expression to more masculine qualities of movement.

Cameron is a member of the ESV Ensemble. He has performed in Faust at the Goetheanum. Alumnus of Im-pulse.Eurythmy, 2011, and Stage Training with Eurythmy Spring Valley, Cameron’s degrees include BA Norwegian Eurythmy School 2013; MA Alanus University 2018.

*Laying the Groundwork for Creative Speech: An Investigation of the Weaving, Supporting Fundamentals of Body, Breath, Voice, and Imagination as a Path to Creative Speech / John McManus

John is a theatre artist, originally from Australia, where he began his career studying Rudolf Steiner’s creative speech and the Michael Chekhov acting technique. He is a speech artist and eurythmist. John gives workshops at the Michael Chekhov Association and the Herbert Berghof Studios in New York City.

Speaking the Calendar of the Soul Verses / Matěj Rybka

Workshop 6, Saturday.

We will explore the Soul Calendar verse of the week (number 17, July 30-August 6) in both German and English with a focus on developing the qualities of speech needed for the artistic expression of Rudolf Steiner’s cosmic lyric.

Matěj is currently living in Spring Valley, NY and was trained, after his eurythmy graduation in Stourbridge in 2021, in Creative Speech (Sprachgestaltung) with both Geoffrey Norris and Agnes Zehnter. He has recently performed internationally with his graduation program “Phoenix,” a colorful collage of poetry, storytelling, and dramatic speeches on the theme of life and death.

Aristotle’s Categories and Eurythmy / Claudia Fontana

My constant question is: How can I augment, enliven, and expand content, how to melt intellectual concepts from their frozen form to an experience? The sounds of speech connect us directly to the cosmos, to the starry worlds and present a tool for this endeavor. Suitable for all interested in such a quest.

Claudia graduated from the Eurythmy School of Vienna, Austria in 1970. For fourteen years she was a performer and then embarked on teaching in various Waldorf Schools in the US, Thailand, and Malaysia, and for seven years taught all levels in China.

Eurythmy Story Script Workshop / Susan Strauss

This workshop will help eurythmists work more effectively with story texts. My experience as a professional storyteller and a college poetry major influenced my work as a eurythmist and likewise, my work as a eurythmist greatly influenced my work as a storyteller and author. To share this experience, we will look at a few sample texts from my latest book, Tree with Golden Apples: Botanical and Agricultural Wisdom in World Myths, in which the stories are written with a strong attention to the use of sound in language. We will compare this with story texts that lack this element and practice how to infuse a text with sounds, repetitions and syntax effects without creating an obvious or contrived effect.

Past performances include: Smithsonian Natural History Museum, US National Park Service, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh, National Geographic Society, National Gallery of Art, and the Oregon Symphony. She is the author of five books: Tree with Golden Apples: Botanical and Agricultural Wisdom in World Myths; When Woman Became the Sea: A Costa Rican Creation Myth; The Passionate Fact: Storytelling in Natural History and Cultural Interpretation; Wolf Stories: Myths and True Life Tales from around the World; and Coyote Stories for Children; as well as six recordings and original narratives for museum exhibits, a National Forest Service salmon watershed restoration project, and a National Park Service film on the wolf in mythology used in Yellowstone National Park. She has been teaching eurythmy since 2010.
