Meeting the Trial of the Soul Conference
Rudolf Steiner’s Mystery Dramas bring together theater arts and a modern initiation path. Steiner portrays the unfolding destinies of a group of karmically connected individuals on a path of inner development. This is not an intellectually worked-out plotting of fictional characters nor an instruction about the general laws of karma, but a realistic portrayal of a group of individuals working out their destinies together. The Trial of the Soul, the second Drama, enters the depths of human soul life, where each character must unfold the layers of their will, uncovering the difficulties that arise in social life and in the practice of dedicated spiritual striving.
Deepen and enhance your experience of the play in an intensive weekend conference that prepares attendees to fully participate in the theatrical performance with attention and inner rigor. The conference will host a cognitive preparation for the play through keynote lectures delivered by Daniel Hafner. Moreover, a preparation for the life of feeling and will through conversation groups, and workshops.
Workshops
Encountering the Reality of Soul Forces
Eurythmy with Virginia Hermann.
Entering into qualities and characteristics of the four soul forces who appear in the second drama, as well as aspects of the opposing forces Lucifer and Ahriman.
A Writing Workshop
With Adeline Lyons.
In this writing workshop, we will explore the fairytale of the Rock Spring Wonder, told by Felicia, the wise storyteller, in the Trial of the Soul. This story, seemingly simple but deeply complex, comes to Capesius, the scholar, as he is in a deep state of spiritual crisis. We can ask: how does this tale guide or reveal, amid inner turbulence? We will read the fairytale together, attending closely to the words the Water Women speak. Then, inspired by their speeches, we’ll deepen our understanding through creative writing, poetic or prosaic. No prior knowledge is necessary to participate!
Crisis to Trial to – ?
Crisis breaks us open; Trial is how we deal with it.
A workshop with Laurie Portocarrero.
In Rudolf Steiner’s second mystery drama, each of the four main characters encounters a crisis right at the beginning. The crisis breaks them open. The opening to new capacity allows them to see their former incarnation. How they deal with this new sight/experience/knowledge becomes their Trial of the Soul.
Through the tools of the dramatic arts, our workshop will explore the very different ways in which each of our four main characters meets and deals with his/her crisis, opening, and trial.
